Nevada voters to decide on tax-exempt status for diapers
Nevada could soon join 20 other states that already exempt diapers from sales taxes.
Question five is a proposed amendment to the Sales and Use Tax Act of 1955 that would exempt diapers from sales taxes.
A “Yes” vote would exempt child and adult diapers from the Sales and Use Tax Act of 1955, the Local School Support Tax Law, and certain analogous sales and use taxes.
A “No” vote would keep the current provisions of the Sales and Use Tax Act of 1955, the Local School Support Tax Law, and certain analogous sales and use taxes.
Those fighting for the passage of question five argue that diapers are a healthcare necessity, saying without them families and adults who rely on them face a host of illnesses from skin infections, to rashes and viral meningitis.
If question five were to pass, it is estimated consumers would save about $84 a year on sales taxes.
Those urging a no vote say it would result in less revenue for the state and local governments.
The fiscal note on this question estimated nearly $8 billion would be lost each fiscal year.
If question five passes it would go into effect January 1, 2025.
