Taiwanese singer Ella Chen may love being a mother but she is stopping at one. Calling her three-year-old son Daniel, "a blessing in more ways than one", she revealed in an interview that her pregnancy and childbirth was so difficult, she has decided against having more kids.
During her pregnancy, the 38-year-old suffered from severe nausea and cramps. She also opted for a water birth and decided against getting an epidural, but 20 hours in the delivery suite later, her doctor informed her that her cervix was still too thick and that she had to have a natural birth instead. Immediately after she delivered Daniel, the baby was put on a respirator as he had choked on amniotic fluid and meconium, which worried Ella and her husband Alvin greatly.
Ella also revealed that she had suffered from a host of postpartum complications.Because she had blocked breast ducts, she had to rely on a nurse's help to pump her breast milk, or risk suffering from an infection caused by the inflammation of breast tissue. Her difficult birth also caused both her bladder and womb to sag, which resulted in stress incontinence and bladder prolapse. Even doing things like sneezing, jumping or running would make her bladder leak. "It was so [severe] that the entire underpad and my pants would get soaked [with urine]." Ella's condition was so severe that she had to go for sling surgery last May.
So when Ella was asked on her Dou Yin live broadcast if she intended to have another kid, she quipped, "The palace has been sealed! Do you know what [my womb] can be compared to? The Cold Palace!"
Some netizens then explained to those who are unfamiliar with Chinese history that the Cold Palace was where empresses and concubines who went out of favour with the emperor were banished to, and that Ella was effectively saying that she would not be having baby number two.
"I don't intend to have another child, but I like having fun, Ella said. 'If you use protection, it's not as fun, so I haven't been using [condoms]. But I have my own methods of avoiding another 'present' from appearing in [our lives]."Um, TMI much?
